Dark Matter at Hakan Akkaya

Hakan Akkaya’s penchant for all things black and gothic turned his FW17 collection into a feast for the texturally-obsessed, as he moved from leather to elastic to zippers to velvet to gabardine to fur, everything existing not so much as itself but as a response to reflected light off a singularly black and metallic palette. Akkaya countered the blackness of his clothing with strategically exposed skin—beneath sheer netting, zipper harnesses, and standalone suspenders that contrasted with the weight of his exaggerated puffers and especially poignant burqas. Tailoring got voyeuristic as leather belts and harnesses were integrated into dresses and suits, as zippers formed peplums, tiered sleeves, and wrapped the silhouettes with rows upon rows of metal teeth ready for the kill.
